Beware of electricity comparison sites: How to know which ones to use

There are lots of electricity plans on offer in Australia and while this is great for choice, it can be hard to know which one is right for you.

That’s where electricity comparison websites are so handy, but it’s important to know they’re not all equal.

Generally speaking, there are two main types of electricity comparison sites: government-run sites and commercial sites.

While at first glance they might all seem equal, commercial electricity comparison websites are unlikely to be as independent as they might appear and don’t always list all of the available plans, including some that may work out cheaper or more suitable for you.

For example, the ABC recently compared three commercial electricity comparison websites against the Victorian Government-run website Victorian Energy Compare. They found that “the cheapest listed product on Victorian Energy Compare didn't appear on any of the [three] commercial comparison sites”.

So for an independent comparison that takes into account all of the available offers, it’s best to turn to government-run electricity comparison websites first. In all states other than Victoria, this is Energy Made Easy. In Victoria, it’s Victorian Energy Compare.
